Martha Latta was playing Ani DiFranco at Stomping Ground when I stopped in to deliver an inaugural batch of Bebito plush toys. Barely two months on the scene, this Windsor Park boutique is looking and sounding cute, stylish and smart.

Martha and her husband Mark have been active and invested in the Windsor Park neighborhood since their arrival in 2007, and the positive influence is apparent. Stomping Ground is a charming combination of work space, retail space and community space in an area of near-east Indy that is becoming more and more vibrant. The shop carries a wide range of tastefully curated goods, from jewelry to garden supplies, including the work of many local artisans and Martha’s own line, Sunday Afternoon Housewife. It’s situated right next to Kan-Kan, a soon-to-open brasserie and cinema, and five minutes walk from the behemoth landmark known as the Circle City Industrial Complex (home of the Bebito Studio.)

Having spent the first decade of my life in this neighborhood, it is heartening to see the Latta’s and other residents finding their homes here. The historic Spades Park Library (where I got my first library card) still stands proudly looking out toward the equally historic trees of Spades Park (where I got many skinned knees leaping off the swings). Stomping Ground is in a neatly renovated house painted a cheerful blue, with a welcoming porch and yard that holds benches and a fire pit for friendly gatherings. It’s sure to be a place to nurture community conversation and neighborhood pride, as well as a lovely place for some retail therapy.
